Irchester Parish Historical Society

Lying on the banks of the River Nene with its lush cattle grazing meadows is Chester-on-the-Water, a deserted medieval hamlet, adjacent to an abandoned Roman township. The A45 east-west expressway separates this historic landscape from Irchester, a dramatically developed conurbation, now the largest populated village in the county.

The hamlet of Little Irchester, developed around a railway in the 19th century, the old estate village of Knuston with its Hall, and Ditchford with its medieval bridge and once famous Treacle Mines are all represented.

74 images dating from the 1840s to the 1960s depict the changing face of this parish. Buildings, homes, characters, transport, crafts and industry are illustrated within this 44 page, A5 booklet Each picture is accompanied by a graphic description

written by the author, Jon-Paul Carr, Chairman of Irchester Parish Historical Society, who has spent  years , since the age of 11 researching the history of the area.
