INTRODUCTION



Established in the 195Os The Carr Collection photo library now contains over 10,000 images of Irchester parish alone and it would be impractical to include them all in one book. 80 pictures from the past are shown and I hope they evoke fond memories and promote discussion. A special thank you is extend to all my friends who have assisted over the past years with pictures, information and advance orders. Without their help this book could not have been produced.


Major transport links historically connect our parish with the rest of Northamptonhire and beyond. Important stagecoach routes like the Kettering to Newport Pagnell turnpike of 1753-1754 and the Great Staughton to Wellingborough turnpike of 1754 1755 both passed through the parish. From 1761 the River Nene was navigable from Northampton to Peterborough, and in 1845 the Blisworth, Northampton and Peterborough railway came, followed by the Midland Railway's Leicester to Hitchin extension in 1857. All these events contributed to the wealth and development of our neighbourhood with: the ease of transportation of people, the movement of our cattle and crops to market, new customers further afield for our brickmakers, the delivery of grain to the malting's and flour mills by boat and train, the removal of iron ore from our quarries by rail, the daily delivery of fresh Parsons' Pies to our capital city. Not forgetting of course the end products from our world-famous local boot and shoe manufacturers. Progress has resulted in change and an attempt is made here to record that change in some small way.


Each picture caption, while individually explicit, is numbered consecutively from the first book, Pictures Past, and subsequent books Pictures Past 2 and Pictures Past 3. This is intended to aid reference to related information and is shown thus [1] at. the end of each picture caption.


The compilation of this book has involved years of research and cross-referencing to ensure the captions are correct. Should the reader prove otherwise, I would be most grateful for correct, and indeed any additional, information. ….J.P.Carr 2010
